It sound like assumptions are being made about the amount of dots in a
domainname. How would you differentiate between a hostname and a domainname?

If "google.com" is a domainname.
I assume "www.google.com" is a hostame.

What is "pcservices.co.za" ?
and "www.pcservices.co.za" ?

My vote would be for how squid works.

google.com means google.com
.google.com means *google.com (including google.com)

As long as it is documented well, everyone will understand.
